Lessons Not Learned

Mothers and daughters to the factory floor
The country's in trouble we're off to War
All the young men in battle over there
Everyone pitchs in to do their own share

Can we find meaning for what seems insane?
Tools for destruction we help build the planes
In the end so many men will be lost
Families destroyed but a piece of the cost

The goal is freedom paid for with young lives
Children orphaned, mothers no longer wives
Nineteen fortyfive our victory day
Row upon row all the dead soldiers lay

Still it seems we repeat mistakes from the past
We thought that our lessons were made to last
Peace temporary we keep going back
We can't claim truth if it's us who attack

I think that is hope beyond hope. We humans are rather thick headed. If they left the decisions to the poets the world would be a lot safer.

Great write Richard. History repeats it'self. It will happen over and over again. It is all about power and for what? At the end everyone dies. I just finished watching the story of Pablo Escobar from Colombia. The most wanted criminal. He killed a lot of people and caused a lot of distruction in his own Country. He had money to burn and at the end he was killed. In December 02 of 1993 He was gunned down by the police and the Colombian Army. Thanks for sharing. Lucilla

Poignant write Richard! I love the rise of the conscience in your writes - something every poet should aspire to. That last line brings out the theme very astutely. Well articulated!

It's an important them, Richard. Why oh why do they continue fighting? History just repeats and repeats, showing the foolhardiness of man. And yet, I blame it on those big leaders who are so greedy and corrupt. Do you think there would still be wars if only the common man was in charge. Maybe there would still be wars I guess. Good topic and poem
