Heartbroken

Five excruciating months I’ve spent inside this corset made of steel. It binds the soul beneath my broken column. See me standing here naked before this bleak and arid landscape, fissured like the furrows of this barren yellow plain on which a child to call my own will never play. See my flesh impaled by nails. From head to toe they travel down my body. See the largest nail. It pricks that part of me from whence my love flowed freely for the one man I adored. . . See my chest, which houses the heart that he has pierced again and again and again. See my tears, white against my sullen face. Only you who know true heartbreak can feel the anguish painted in my eyes. My body I laid bare to help you see inside me, but how can someone paint the sorrowed soul? Five excruciating months I’ve spent inside this corset made of steel. It’s only an extension of my entire life’s ordeal. Though it’s meant to heal me, it is but a constant cruel reminder that heartbreak is my companion Ever more. 9/6/13 For the Women who Paint Contest Series: FRIDA KAHLO in Free verse contest Sept. 5, 2021 for ''H'' Contest, New Or Old Poems Poetry Contest Sponsor: Constance La France

fI think you should win the contest for this one. It reminds me of when I had spinal surgery and had to wear a brace for a while. You paint a nice portrait of Frida Kahlo's suffering here. Thanks for your kind words on my poetry. I am taken with the 2 books you sen me. Peace & Love Matthew Anish

You captured even the sensibilities of Frida between the lines of this excellent example of her work. Brava Andrea!

I looked at the painting. You've captured the looks and story so very well. The spaces between the stanzas are like the braces. As per usual you have great energy and expression. You are a real master on so many levels. Adieu for now.

Ah yes! Frida was obsessed with painting herself. Your poem brings this out so long as one has seen the work of Frida Kahlo. Frida might have been rather nice looking except for her suffering. Hey, dat be one ogly woman. Love, daver

A superb use of typography. At the end of each stanza, the woman's suffocation and sorrow are masterfully given life by the terse, breathless lines--especially: "Ever more." Which elicits a woman taking a stifled breath as she squeezes in to that "Corset Made of Steel" which is her life crushed by societies' unfair and unrealistic expectations of a woman. I enjoyed it immensely. Sincerely, Alex
