Inheritance

Destiny’s child spoke to me, Accentuating the triumph Of my forebears, Gifting me with their legacy In the form of this life I now walk. Their visions were appointed Upon my birthday, An inheritance to my independence And the sovereignty For which they fought. I am what they believed in. They saw in me Relative dreams And prayed They would not be denied Thoughtful significance When at last I reached tomorrow. This is why I’ve chosen To remember and carry Their distinction To another destiny’s child Who waits anointing. I have become grandparent To hope’s ancestors, Building the fortune of their future With every word and deed, Processing accountability, Even in my sleeping. Let the possibilities Of the past Exist within today, Making clear our union With all descendants; Most significant to our immortality.
