Faces of Loneliness

Loneliness is the old woman walking home with her shopping bags,
      She is a solitary recluse, cut off from the world with no family;
Friendless with the exception of the ancient cat waiting for her return,
               Her home is full of tattered memories from a past life.

Loneliness is the man who goes for a small coffee every single day,
     He is always by himself and seems so forlorn and sad, withdrawn;
The only person he spoke to today was the server who took his order,
                 Her friendliness is the only joy in his life this day.

Loneliness is the emptiness of so many souls in this world of ours,
     Having selected to live the life of hermits rather than change;
They walk this world shadows of what they were or could be again,
                 Living within their own thoughts and heartbreaks.

Loneliness is the solitary person dying alone, companion-less,
     It was not always so, once upon a time they had bright dreams;
O, so many dreams but the dreams had long ago dried up,
                  And with a faint sigh, secluded they finally let go

Powerful poem. We all share in this experience at times. Comes from fear. We are more afraid to open ourselves up to strangers so we cower to a mental fetal position and cry to the heavens. One of the saddest of human conditions which you have penned with a compassionate heart. Allan

Wow! This poem stopped me in my tracks and made me contemplate my own path. I usually try to avoid the thoughts that your poem evoked as I can see myself in the shoes of one of your examples. In my opinion it is the mark of a great poem to bring suppressed emotions to the surface for a reader, as you often do. I hope all is well with you and yours. Joe

There are so many faces of loneliness.....too many ways to be lonely......this brings to heart a few of those who need a friend, someone to care, if only more of us could reach out and recognize a lonely person, and do something to change the world.....if only for just one. A lovely poem. :)

You surely are the mistress of sadness, I don't mean that in a bad way, I mean that you are a master of writing about the sadness that we encounter in life! Showing others who chose to live their life in such a way, such a sad event! I hate to hear of people that end up this way, I want to be their friend, to be that someone they can talk to and share their life with, because their life is worth listening too and sharing! I know that is what you wanted us to garnish out of this poem, and I have!
