Cockrels Before the Sleeping Gods
(letters to my presido-elect): iii
& native cockrels
wept
we wept out loud prayers
to sleeping deities –
& the decades saw the rivers
the current of flowing tears
the fifty long years
of flowing tears
of varied injury hours –
& we filed out
like cattle for slaughter
the slaughter of the daughters
the daughters of the fathers
the fathers of the ancients
the ancients of the soil –
& we came
awaiting
the replies
of mid-night gods!
