At the Subway

She stood alone at the far end of the subway platform. I was waiting for the same train at the platform's other end. Every now and then we would look in each others direction. We began engaging in harmless long distance flirtation. Our train arrived and opened its doors and just as she and I were about to board we stole one last glance at each other and briefly flirted once more. It was a long time ago but to this very day I often ask myself to the point of sounding cliche. "Could she have been The One, but got away?"
