After the Storm

We would run through the rain not as children on whose skin the droplets cling, but as thieves stealing through a steamy midday's night. Many storms were weathered in this way as our innocence, like sugar, melted down to join the growing puddle of our family's tears. We would have vanished into nothingness save for the sun that burst through a heavy nimbus-night to lead us from the darkness into light.
