A Man of Honor
Dear Grandpa, my words to you on angel's wing
fly from my heart with love and admiration.
Family always came first, your actions loving.
You set an example for generations.
A photograph of you I keep in a frame,
handsome in uniform, eyes shine like a flame.
An older man, I knew with stories retold.
You served our country with a brave heart of gold.
A courageous marine, you served in two wars,
only sixteen when you enlisted to serve.
Many boys sent to battle on foreign shores
came back honored men. Our freedom was preserved
thanks to the sacrifice of brave souls like yours.
We never knew traumas you had to endure
until dementia tormented with flashbacks,
a sad glimpse into the battlefield's impact.
