My Hometown

Grew up in the sixties on Long Island, N.Y., where we had sidewalks, and where you could walk, to local stores, schools, or doctors, or just your neighbor for a talk… Summers went swimming, at the Village Green Pool, afterwards bought a Mr. Softee cone to help me stay cool, In the Fall went to Northside Elementary, then later Division Avenue High... and had to walk to school, there was no bus ride… Winters watched Ed Sullivan, with my family and dog, keeping an eye on the fire, and the smoldering logs… Went back for a visit, could see the change, with trees a lot taller, the houses with built on dormers, the taxes got a lot higher, Nassau County is to blame… Can you guess where I am from, my hometown was built in the late forties, for returning vets, by a man none other than, Mr. Levitt.

This is a thought-provoking, nostalgic , finely rendered adventure in history--the history of cheryl's hometown and the era in which she was raised. I enjoyed every line. Excellent, cheryl.

Very nicely done. My wife had an uncle who sold his farm to the builders of Levittown and moved to Florids...I can feel the nostalgia in your work.

I probably misled you...his land was sold to the Pennsylvania Levittown which would have been about 1950. Pretty sure the New York Levittown was much closer to the war's end..1946 probably! Sorry for the error.

You are correct as Alex Trebeck from Jeapordy would say! Living there when I was young reminded me of the movie "Pleasantville" a little bit, but then in the late 60's it started to change and the town wasn't as "pleasant" to live in anymore…where did you live back east?

My brothers, sisters and I lived there (guess, the clues are all there!) until 1972 when we moved further out on Long Island to Nesconset. Us older siblings did not like the move since we missed a lot of our friends in junior and senior high school from guess where. Found out later that Billy Joel grew up in the town next to ours! Thats another clue! Happy reading and God Bless all of you!
