Midwinter Night's Dream
Midst sullen storm and winter's grip,
Secure and warm I toddies sip.
By fireside glow my thoughts take wing.
While watching snow, I dream of spring.
Spring's swimming pools, azalea shrubs,
And garden tools and hiking clubs.
It's daffodils and meadows green,
Beguiling hills and robins seen.
Spring's sandals, shorts, and twilight strolls
And outdoor sports and fishing holes.
It's parks and plows and lake canoes
And budding boughs and barbecues.
Spring's berry pies and blossom scents
And butterflies and camping tents.
It's barefoot boys and scabby knees
And playground noise and climbing trees.
Spring's sandy shores and open doors.
It's burgers grilled and bleachers filled.
It's nesting pairs, awakened bears
And county fairs and folding chairs.
Spring's frisbees thrown and fledglings born
And lilies grown for Easter morn.
It's graduation, seeking jobs,
And spring vacation's rowdy mobs.
Spring's thunderstorms and lightning bolts,
Orlando swarms and Derby colts.
It's Masters play and op'ning day,
The Final Four and Indy's roar.
Spring's wagonloads on country roads,
Balloons and kites and eagle flights.
It's dates for proms, a day for moms,
A bride's trousseau and lawns to mow.
Spring's April rains and billowed sails
And shady lanes and followed trails.
It's love's caress and early dawn
And happiness that winter's gone.
