Most jurors I have heard share their experience would at least agree that the devil is in the details missed, revealed, vaguely half remembered shadows with few moments of divinely radiant clarity. But I fear I have misjudged your point.

echoes of witch trial days still ring in the courts, "do you swear....so help you god?"...it's custom, civil culture, somehow rationalizing the process...sin against the court and you sin against god; vice versa (i've no idea)
