Homecoming of An Alumnus

Like a restless dog haunted by a place
where it vaguely recalls having buried
        long ago something personally precious,
        he keeps coming back with the seasons
        to this campus for a quiet homecoming.

Looking at the much younger generation,
he wistfully wonders if only these kids
        knew he was best debater, basketball star,
        physics gold medalist, essay-writing champ
        and heartthrob of the loveliest in this school.

But they don't know and even if they're told,
they wouldn't care, much less be impressed;
        so he just keeps the glorious days in his head;
        but as he turns to go, he notes how some of them
        look like absent classmates years ago dead!
