Happiness
If happiness was tangible,
We'd hold it in our hands.
We'd weigh it and we'd measure it
And tie it with strong bands.
We'd keep it under lock and key
So none of it could stray.
We'd hoard it and we'd treasure it,
Give none of it away.
Pursuit of happiness is assured
By America's Constitution
And he who would take that away
Must make a restitution.
A gift of happiness may be given
But only to one's self.
It can't be wrapped in gaudiness
And stored upon a shelf.
The seeds of happiness are planted
In one's own state of mind.
They must be nourished there and cherished,
A true happiness to find.
Don't marry to find happiness,
No one has that to give.
You choose your way to happiness
By the exultant way you live.
(My assignment "Happiness") won 9th place
