Artful Purpose

Hitherto, haphazard colors knew no bounds
-across the stark black and white pages,
they painted with cheerful abandon;
intense furrowed brows, hard at work
-masterpieces bound for the refrigerator door
or Dad’s office desk, free will
proudly personified, before “inside the lines”
was more readily celebrated along with
faces colored in pinks and browns
not blue and green – Grover and Kermit exempted.

Praise dried up for sloppy work
as quickly as an uncovered marker,
until we learned to be more careful with both.
Yet it was still impossible to return them to the box
the same way they came out!
So, all the dried up victims left in a box
to go back where they came from
-Haphazard Heaven I presume.

Dear Craig, I relished the imagery, nostalgia and thought-provoking quality of your poem. I was especially struck by "Yet it was still impossible to return them to the box/the same way they came out!" - that's true of crayons, markers and many other things in life, physically, intellectually and emotionally. After learning to color inside the lines, I sometimes choose to color outside the lines when whimsy wins out. Nice to have options :) Congratulations for your success in Mark's contest. Warmest wishes.. ~Susan

Susan, thank you and I'm not surprised that your writing is so well appreciated - I surely do!

This has depth, it is the kind of poetry-profoundness worthy of line by line study; there is so much to unpack. Outstanding. Congratulations on your placement. I haven't done the math, but my visual is that you've placed in all but 1 and are the only 1 to have done so - I'm blowing the brag horn on your behalf. Poetry hugs ... CayCay

Craig, love the nostalgia and your delightful humor, which takes me back to my Crayola days. Whatever size box my mom would buy me there was always a larger one with more colors that I coveted. Oh well … Congratulations on your top 10 win on Mile 6 of my 2025 Poetry Marathon Contest. Keep your running shoes on, because Mile 7 has already started.

This is wonderfully nostalgic! I love how it captures the messy, joyful chaos of childhood art and the little victories (and losses) of coloring outside the lines. It feels like a snapshot of creative freedom before rules stepped in.

Delightful use of remembered childhood beginnings. Growth isn't always how we perceive it. :o)
