Hogan's Heroes
Hogan’s Heroes The old black and white, 26” screen TV. There was three channels. Of course there was no remote, I was the remote. My dad ruled the airwaves. He watched what he wanted. There was no argument, no appeal to a higher power. He was the higher power. But on Thursday evening at 7:00, my mom and me watched Hogan’s Heroes. My mom had a hard childhood, she didn’t find a lot of things funny, let alone to laugh at. But she laughed when we watched Hogan’s Heroes. “Hooogaaan!!!!!” Colonel Klink would wail in frustration at Hogan’s antics. “I know nothing!!!!” bellowed cowardly Sgt. Schultz. Hogan was always one step ahead of those goose stepping Huns. Making Nazis look stupid tickled my mom. This was in 65. The war was twenty years ago, but her memories were not. I read an article of how the actors who played the Nazi roles were all Jews. They agreed to play those parts only if they could make them look like idiots and fools. After all of that misery, they wanted the world to laugh; laugh at them and their twisted souls. Laughter can make men much smaller than hate. On Thursday nights at 7, my mom obliged. 2/15/18
