Haibun
HAIBUN Ol’ man winter’s frosty breath blows cold flakes in to deep mounds. His crystal blades suspended like daggers from eave edges waiting for the right time to strike. His white blankets never cease to fall, layer upon unrelenting layer. Slick asphalt hiding black ice truck spins in circles. Bag after bag of halite fighting the freezing onslaught of slippery steps. Lowe’s is making money. Engine growls in to action as augur fights losing battle in the driveway. First sweat pants then snow pants. Under socks then insulated. Shirt followed by sweatshirt followed by heavy coat. Gloves and ski mask complete the ensemble. I am considered an essential employee. Must get to work no matter the conditions. Four months to retirement Shorts, t-shirt, bare feet Florida beckons
