Mother
All through the years The crying in the night All through the tears You were my shining light Those first steps of walking Stumbling and falling Those first words of talking To you I turned calling Waking from the nightmares Sick in bed and on the floor Grazed knees and brand new scars Your arms were always an open door The terror of my first day How I didn't want to let go As I heard you softly say It'll be okay, and it was just so And when my first love came Then in a flash it was gone You said they're not all the same You gave me strength to carry on All through the teen years Oh how I gave you hell But most were joyful tears And it turned out well Through heartbreak and joy My childhood days were done Innocence had gone away My life without you had just begun And when true love came at last You stood right by my side I made you gran with my first Oh how you beamed with pride And when my little one tumbled and fell Then my eye filled with a tear I knew how you had loved me as well My baby had nothing to fear And with those first words You shared my happiness I saw in your eyes those worlds The memories turned to sadness I saw the ages in your face The lines not there before Your body could not keep the pace Not so strong any more Yet you were still beautiful As you ever had been Yet eyes shown fearful Of days not yet seen Weakened by age I saw you stay strong Till the very last stage And your time was not long As you stumbled and fell With tears I held your hand I knew you were not well And now it was I, to help you stand And with those last words I watched you slip away Broken is my world I wish you would stay All through those years I'm still crying in the night All through the tears You're still my shining light
