The Soldier's Death
"THE SOLDIER'S DEATH" Nick could not save Private Johnny from death, the task seemed so simple on the front line- He held him as he took his final breath, Johnny had stepped on a shielded land mine, pride and glory were no longer divine. Johnny’s blood was dripping from injury, shrapnel damaged Nick’s eyes he just couldn’t see- But he felt Johnny’s poor heart stop beating, it was no longer the land of the free, this memory of death kept repeating. His lifeless body free to return home, Nick knew he had to face Johnny’s widow- She had been abandoned and left alone, full of shock, astounded with constant woe. But Nick knew the pain only she could know. He arrived at the wake and saw his wife, he could see her anguish; tormented strife- she saw Nick and instantly felt better, even though the pain cut like a sharp knife. It was then Nick gave her Johnny’s letter. She wept with him and they hugged in relief, read the letter and couldn’t believe her eyes- Filled with such joy and even disbelief, Johnny had left her a stunning surprise. ‘Twas a jade necklace he won as a prize, at the downtown Baghdad gala last Spring. She loved it; it matched her great-grandma’s ring, now she could wear them as a matching set- She knew in her heart he’d do anything, even give her something she couldn’t forget.
