Walk Through Me
Walk Through Me If I could be there by your side. If only some way you could see. I’d take you gently by the hand and take a walk through me. Be cautious of the broken road, it gets better as we go. It’s paved with good intentions and all the things I didn’t know. Over there you’ll see some mountains, I climbed them all but one. I hope someday to climb it too before my time is done. You see that forest yonder? It’s trees encased in frost. It was deep within its shadows where my innocence was lost. I was too young to understand the things that someday be. A stranger in the nighttime stole that away from me. The bones there in the clearing are from dragons I have slain. I fought with everything I had til not one of them remain. Beware that raging river! It runs both deep and wide. Not made of rain from heaven. It’s made from tears I cried. That iron frame that used to be a bridge that I once burned. Reminding me from time to time hard lessons that I learned. You see that house up on that hill? On the door it bears my name. No one lives there anymore, it is my house of shame. That book that’s lying on its porch, it’s cover is so worn. Words inside written in red it’s pages ripped and torn. It saved me many times before that’s all that I can say. Except I guess, to tell the truth it’s still saving me today. Up around this bend a ways puts a smile on my face. It’s unselfish deeds I’ve done, and it’s called my happy place. Well it seems it’s getting late but thank you for the time. Maybe we’ll return one day in perhaps another rhyme? If I might ask before you go one favor if you please. Leave with me a smile or two for my box of memories. Edwin C Hofert Nov 28 2017
