The End of Mankind
THERE IS NO MUSIC There is no music, I hear no more song. Is it really true that we are all gone? Yet life does continue without any rush, And the music now heard, is the song of a thrush. So many creatures lost during our time In a split second measured, a universal crime. Where did we go wrong, why did we not listen. We folk understood, but not men of position. What part did we play, what purpose were we. Was greed our unfailing, now all just debris. Did you see the last tiger, just one eagle soared free. Yes we cried with their loss, with raw guilt to foresee. The gorillas long gone, the rhino nowhere to see. A motherless young whale, in a black oily sea. There was time enough to have turned things around, Yet desire for more was deemed far more profound. Magnificent cities, rising high in the sky. Yet never enough, the demand always to multiply. Now with all gone, with nature to choose, Green life cloaks man’s ruins, the past without clues. Long eons have passed, unpolluted skies are once more Huge forests abound with crystal seas as never before. How foolish to believe we alone were supreme. The virus unknown put an end to that dream. Tall trees now uncut, sparkling sun on long grass, Swaying flowers grow wild, roaming antelope pass. Rivers roar wild to meet pristine new seas, Released from man’s bondage, stone walls now appease. Woodlands regrown, the oceans replenished, The wonder of nature remains undiminished. So where is the sound to reflect the world’s sorrow? Now that man is no longer a part of tomorrow. Some said the way forward was to colonise Mars To leave behind a sad world devoid of all charms. Yet who could have known that in times long ago, A Mars then so blue was also made fallow. There is no music, I hear no more song. Is it really true that we are all gone? Hooray, truth be told we are all still here But not for much longer unless we adhere. Do not allow into power those of egocentricity. Holding disproportionate wealth and devoid of all pity. Their idea of a future seems really quite hollow. Yet the path they have chosen, we all blindly follow. Nature’s heart has till now been most forgiving. Yes you, with a life that is so worth living. For the sake of your children and for those not yet born, Let these words be testament to a future forewarned. There is no music, I hear no more song. Is it really true that we are all gone?
