Oh Glorious Poinciana
Oh Glorious Poinciana Bright flames of the Poinciana Reach out for the golden sun The large leaves bend with their tiny fronds To wave with the wind in fun. The bulging lime green buds Stand upright as if to say Just look at me I’ll soon be open I’m ready to be on my way. Such flaming red ‘gainst the lush green palette Inspires the artist’s brush And warms the heart of those who see God’s beauty despite life’s rush It’s magnificent canopy of red Gives shelter from the blazing sun On the ground is a carpet so bright on green grass Velvet touch to bare feet as you pass. Each flor’ holds out it’s skirt wide Showing an apron of white With splashes of red, its such a delight To see such a wonderful sight. The birds sing their song top your branches The bees do their work with the pollen Then come the seeds as the pods hang low Waiting for children to rattle them. Oh Glorious Poinciana You welcome with arms stretched wide You dress the Jamaican hills and seaside For our pleasure from mid July. Winsome Miller-Rowe July 2011
