Mirror To My Soul
I am looking in my mirror and a stranger looks back at me. When did this happen, have I lost memory? There's a pain in my eyes and a fear on my brow My hair is torn and white now He is standing close behind me I can feel his breath Yet in the mirror there is nothing just the sour scent of death I can feel his presence all about me, so strong Been fighting him for far too long I feel stabbing round my heart and soul, he's fighting rough My strength is sapping from me, am I strong enough? My eyes are stinging with the boiling rage of my own tears This demon has experience of years The flashes the gross intense flickers of my childhood are about me And my body is shaking and crying out in agony I am certain that I cant take much more of this please stop, please This flash has brought me to my knees I'm convulsing my whole body is now contorted He is fighting he is hurting me like he won't be thwarted A primeval sound of terror escapes from my lips This must cease before my heart rips There an odour, a ripe and pungent smell around me I think he's toiling and he's sweating ripping through the atoms of me I see nothing I feel ravaged this assault on my senses is killing me My whole essence longs to be free Then a subtle change of tempo and my mind recognises it He is slowing, near the end now I drag my body up to sit My whole being feels the tension it has now become a battle of my will I am shattered he's there still So I drag me back to standing and I face the mirror once again Now I see him, his reflection in the distance of my brain From my soul I let out a mighty roar of misery and pain He is gone when I look again Jane Shields 24th July 2016
