My Meandering Mind
The day is fading into night, The sea turning black as can be. This is when my mind kicks in, When it goes off meandering. It shows me ships from far away, From another time in history. Sailing ships from a distant shore, Sitting, gazing, it shows me more. Roman galleys glide past the ancient reef. Bringing soldiers to covet this land, Traders come from distant places, Exchanging goods from other races. I see the fishermen go out so bold, Casting their nets as in days of old. In frail boats, the sea they try to match, They trawl their nets, hoping for a good catch. The sea is a mistress, they cannot control, One day she is calm, the next she will boil. Many ships have sailed her waters fine, Many have slipped beneath her brine. So now I gaze as the night slips away, The sun bringing forth a brand new day. Fishermen and traders still sail on by, The seabirds still issue their mournful cry. Giant cruise ships daily ply to and fro, Taking tourists where they want to go. Cameras ready faces filled with glee. They sail across the Mediterranean Sea. © Dave Timperley October 4, 2017.
