1947, In Chicago
“Oh maid! I need a kleenex please!” And another bottle of brandy for my dreams to drink. My mind is sinking. Sinking quickly into the pit of my inner emptiness. Mother! Father! Help! Help! I’m sinking past the floating memories of my intrepid youth. Past the coy whispers of young girls grown old. It was only yesterday, 1947… In Chicago, when the pangs of puberty Commenced their onslaught! Mother! Father! Help! Help! I’m too young to feel so old. I’m too old to feel so sad. I’m sad. I’m sad. Help me mom. Help me dad. “Oh maid! I need another kleenex please!” And this bottle of brandy is fast losing its weight. My mind is sinking quickly. My mind is drowning in this whirlpool Of abject aged resignation. Mother! Father! Help! Help! I’m sinking past the swirling scenes of forgotten days. Past the intimate embraces of young girls grown old. It was only yesterday, 1947… In Chicago, when I shed my child’s skin, And now I’m sinking, I’m sinking in. I’m too old to feel so sad. Help me mom. Help me dad.
