Let It Be
A powerful, old man stood in the hallway Staring out the window, near the front door of the house. For the first time ever seen, tears flowing down his face. “I’m sorry”, he said. I asked him, “Why did you do it?” He answered, “I don’t know.” He paced across the old wood floors, with visible shame. Then, he opened the front door to the outside of the house. “I’m sorry I ruined your life, get out of here”, he said. He turned away, as I walked out the door. Later, I heard he told family members the apology was fake. Yet, I knew that it was genuine. I returned to ask, why? His strong, uncaring defense had returned. He never uttered those words again. Settled a case later instead and I let it be. To know what I saw on my own in person, the first time. To know the truth is all that I needed to know, to let go. 8/10/17
