Crimson Pacific
I dig my toes deep in the sand, Let the warmth imbue my bones, Watching water washing stones, The burnished Sol, a fiery brand. The South Pacific Ocean, teal ... Sun-sprites dancing on its caps, Hot sand hissing with its laps, Exquisite colors, nigh surreal. Tender breezes swaying palms, The watercolor heavens above, A splendor I have grown to love, Defiled now with legs and arms. A battle we've been told we "won", Though before me lays no victory, Just bodies buoyed by bloody seas, Boys whose lives had bare begun. How ambiguous, this horrid sight, A beauty here that takes my breath, Yet it holds now only horror, death ... Thus justified, man's twisted might. My break is over, back to task, Retrieving soldiers from the foam, To send whatever's left back home, And after that, well ... Please don't ask. ~ 3rd Place ~ in the "Mid-Summer Standard Any Form" Poetry Contest, Brian Strand, Sponsor.
