Lonely Man
The figure sat in silent woe A lonely soul in empty park He watched the people come and go The daylight passed and sky drew dark. He longed to be amongst the crowd To see his friends up on the street To walk with head erect and proud Instead of slouched upon this seat But all his friends are long since dead His money gone his pride as well His thoughts are of the life he's led Huddled in his private hell A ragged coat upon his back His hair of grey now long and thin His shirt is just a piece of sack Held together with a pin He shivered on his lonely seat Dead autumn leaves brushed at his face He groaned and struggled to his feet It's time he left this lonely place Lighted windows passed he by Bright fires and laughter warmth and rest He stopped to look and gave a sigh And pulled his coat about his chest His home a basement dark and old With crumbling walls and broken panes Everything is damp and cold With seeping water from the drains. How lonely can a person be Alone in rooms so bare We do not look We do not see How many of us care !
