Walter Iv: a New Friend
Walter Bomble was in a bad mood today. Because only that morning he was moved away From his cozy home at the foot of the bed; In Joey’s room with a view of the shed. But that wasn’t the only change in store, For Walter the Bullfrog’s home on the floor. His new house was bigger but still made of glass, And still had a view but now only of grass. As the day went on more changes appearing; Another log, more leaves and under-floor heating. His pond was bigger and he didn’t mind that, But something was wrong so he thought there and sat. He didn’t eat his dinner when it was brought out, Instead he decided it best he should pout. For no-one consulted him in the matter! And right now poor Walter couldn’t feel sadder. He was used to his spot right there on the floor; Close enough to at night hear Joey snore, And hear breakfast chirping from the box on the shelf. With so many fears, he was depressing himself. But the biggest change of all was coming his way When Walter thought Joey came in to play. But Joey was holding a box in his arms That had holes in the top and was tied down with yarn. He untied the box and reached down inside; And inside his hand something orange did hide. It tried to jump but Joey did not let go, Instead he lowered his hand and said “Meet Beano.” “He’s an Ornate Horned Fantasy Frog, So be nice to him now and share your log.” But Walter knew right away that he wouldn’t be tame To this odd colored stranger with the extra long name. So, Joey left them alone to get know one another. But Walter was sulking and couldn’t be bothered. He turned his back to the little orange lad, Who turned up today and invaded his pad. Beano looked around at his new surroundings And jumped at the glass, his head pounding!! He had bumped his nose on the side of the tank. For laughs, Walter thought, at the top this would rank. And he started to giggle, until tears filled the eyes Of this tangerine creature a third of his size. Then all of a sudden Walter remembered His first day here back in early September. His memory went back to the terrible pain When the same bump to head he had sustained. This new guy wasn’t that different from him, Just an odd color and a little more thin. So Walter decided to give him a break; And a great friend that day he did unknowingly make. He welcomed Beano into his humble abode And from that day forth he’d never lone. A friend by his side through thin and through thick. A room-mate he thought was just the trick; To help him get through the lonely days When Joey was at school and couldn’t play. So that night they curled up side by side And watched as the sun said its good-byes. After the lights went out and close of doors Walter and Beano could still hear the snores Of the little boy who loved them so much, And the chirping sounds of tomorrow’s lunch.
