A Lonely Soldier's Night
A LONELY SOLDIER’S NIGHT Staring out at the night’s dark sky, Wondering if anybody cares, Suddenly there in the wind’s soft cry Seems I hear somebody’s prayers Mom must be on her knees, I say, Spouse, she must be praying, too, Now I can make it another day Doing what I volunteered to do. I have some friends and comrades here, They, like me, here in this foreign land Living each day with hope and fear, Serving our country, Uncle Sam. It gets quite lonely so far away, Here in a culture, different and strange, Yet when I know those who still pray, All of my cares seem to rearrange. Fighting for freedom for those who protest? Long, tiring hours here on the field? I cannot do other than just do my best, Not to the negative feelings to yield. Yes, I was lonely till up in the sky I saw the stars there glistening so bright, Then was reminded that God is still nigh, Guarding me, guiding me through lonely nights.
