To My Lil' Girl
To my lil’ girl: I know I only visit you On Saturdays, Or that occasional Holiday, But know that I see you Every day- You're the screensaver To my broken screen protector And that photo Is the first face I see Every morning. To my lil’ girl: I know I don’t live Nearly close enough- I wonder if you still remember When daddy Would wince his way Through another play-date Of playing your jungle gym, My arms were your Pullup bars My shoulders were your swingset And my chest was your Favorite pillow To sleep on. You used to take my thumb in your entire hand, Scale my bed and climb Into my arms. To my lil’ girl: I know when I moved out Of that house we shared, Then sold, Something changed - You weren't my happy little girl Anymore - When your mother and I Divided Like salt and pepper We threw everything you knew away And bought new things, Found new people. You were the only thing That rose from the ashes. To my lil’ girl: I know you aren’t my little girl Anymore. You're a big girl now, And I’ve watched you grow up From far too far away- Through the lens of a Facebook page- And I doubt my Saturday Visits will ever make up For all the time I’ve lost. I’m sorry, My lil’, big girl. I’ve always told you I was one call away, But we both know That was never enough.
