Tears For the Rising Sun
I drank the liquor With hopes of happiness on my breath. As the hot liquid Coated my burning throat, I licked my lips with a smile And felt it permeate my veins. Tingling fingertips kept reaching for that bottle Until functioning became a chore. I stumbled into your room And stepped on your heart. Though my words were slurred, They cut like knives at your tender throat. Choked with blood and tears- You tried to dismiss me. Blinded by intoxication and rage- I swung for everything I was worth. I tried to kill myself last night. I took a knife, a razor, and a broken mirror To my pale flesh. Screaming your name, But not able to reach you- I collapsed with exhaustion. Early this morning I awoke, With blood on my lips And thirst in my mouth. It was almost dawn. I wrapped myself in blankets And bare-footed, I was out the door. Down the road there was a stump With a wide view. I sat this morning And watched the sun rise- Peeking from behind the mountains, With its beautiful colors stretching across- Kissing every cloud As if to say good morning. And as I sat, A speck in the middle Of all this greatness, I thought to myself- I almost missed all of this.
