Come, Make My Heart Nigh Harden
O my life's pleasant breeze, my only dream, Let fresh breeze of better days waft again, Come, feel my heart-felt woes, if not just feign, To make lurid nightmares seem not so grim; O come, let me once again look forward To meeting you and make my grey life green, Let me pretend to be a happy bird, Come, soon to leave, come to hurt as has been. … … … You came … not a fresh breeze, not a leaf moved, You came to roost and left— no meet of heart To know how much or if at all you loved, Like a receding tide you came to part. I scarce can live nor die with such a burden, Pray do something, make my mild heart nigh harden. ___________________________________________ Sonnets | 01.09.2014, revised Nov 2022 | Reproduced from my book, Harvest of the Late Season, published by Penguin (Partridge).
