Blind Date
Going out on a blind date, go see a movie, then grab a table for two Got no expectations whatsoever, honestly I just hope she lets her hair down and be herself Her choice, so it's a romantic comedy, not my favorite genre, I have a mild distaste Note to myself: keep an open mind is what I oughta do It's good to come out the gate with something we disagree So we mud wrestle, knock a few cans off of the top shelf ... make it through the movie okay, that's a relief On the way to dinner, we get into a philosophical debate; why do little girls like to play house, and what make little boys blue Hit a trendy jazz club, gave us soul food servings for three It's Xmas time, they got a big, white-bearded sax man with four swinging elves His horn wails in the early morn, a mixture of joy and grief My date says that the evening is flowing very smooth, really great She says I'm a perfect gentleman, charming through and through I tell her first impressions mean whole lot to me Let her know I'm a simple guy, not into fancy whistles and bells I don't do fake friendship, sucking up and grinning the teeth She said she like the way I roll, how I don't pose or imitate; keeping it real is something she has always tried to do Told me she part company with gossipers and nosy busybodies, or people who don't wanna make something of themselves Says she's a laid back girl, not a home wrecking thief; that she wants her own man, have her own soulmate It has to be somebody who loves being loyal and true He must have a gentle heart, be witty and drama free We both wanted someone unique, unlike anybody else: but a person who had the same hopes, and held a common belief She had a sparkle in her eye, had me thinking it was more than fate --- and the way she looked at me, I could feel the magnetism too Then when she licked her lips, I could taste her saucy mystery She'd opened the treasures in her heart, and was sharing the wealth; now a late bloomer in love like me, felt like I'd just hit the lottery Got smitten loveblind this first time, the second date I can't wait This is a longer version of my poem form "Step Rhyme." I set forth the rhyming pattern in the postscript of my poem, "Man Apart." It is in quatrain form. The first line of the first stanza rhymes w/the second line of the second stanza. The second line of the first stanza rhymes w/the third line of the second stanza. Etcetera, etc. It "steps down" in each succeeding verse. The last line of the final stanza always rhymes w/the first line of the first stanza
