Me and My Past
How am I seen? How am I looked at? What am I known for? What am I remembered for? I glance ahind, And don’t want to look back. It’s too discouraging, too painful, Too many regrets. There is my past: Shadows fleeing and chasing; Strangeness of being; Times and things afore. I think and consider: How have I changed? Who was I? Who am I? Dreams remembered And dreams forgotten Plans carried out And plans abandoned Memories and happenings Things, time and people, come and gone. Traces they are now Fibres of shadows, of that which once was I have gone through thick and thin, Yet I know I have seen nothing; My past seems strange, And my future unlike me Comprehension weaves far ahead of the mind Like the criminal, always a step ahead of the law. Comprehension takes cover Like the bird, in its nest. Life is a teacher The more you live, The more you learn; But the more I learn, The more I seem to have forgotten. This more looks to be in the past.
