Waiting On Sunset
A hot and humid summer day they say it's a heat wave. Thought I'd wait on sunset when the day's end would cool and linger on the horizon. The day itself, from late morning to mid afternoon appeared a humid haze across the gardens. Mid July, nearing mid summer passing too quickly while the evening shadows blot out the sun rays but not heat. A wagging tail stands at the door beside me, waiting patiently looking right then left then straight back and up again to me. The screen door just slightly ajar does not tempt him but should a squirrel or groundhog venture near, well... They all know that the heat is too opressive and so they each wait for the proper moment. I look out with the back door slightly open testing and teasing the humidity to find its own escape. Hot and barely breathable, my dog looks up with questions should we, could we step out for just a little while? As the sun drops lower, barely visible above the tree tops we go, having waited from sunrise and now on sunset's breeze. He runs, I walk and as our bodies adjust we embrace this warm July.
