36000 Days
Several years ago I considered the aging question. I prayed that I would live at least a hundred years. I had come to understand that writing was one of the things that I was suppose to do. In 2049, we would talk again. Who knows? I suppose that I would desire to live even longer. Reaching such a ripe old age has to be quite a feat, and few reach it or get to meet such a person. I am blessed as one who not only knows such a person, but I was honored to be invited by the daughter to the celebration of her mother's one hundredth birthday. A native of Sierra Leon, Africa, a country with a life expectancy of 40 years, Mary defied all the odds. Through her daughter Alice, my wife and I were privileged to be a part of Mary’s life for more than fifteen years. The event was a "sight for wet eyes", because by the end, I had shed many a tear. It was one of the most beautiful and fulfilling events that I have ever attended. There was a vast treasury of words fitly spoken of Mary. There were especially memorable comments from her daughter that capsulized the essence of Mary's character. She is said to be a grateful person, contented, and one who forgives and moves on. Before the celebration, I felt I would not only enjoy it, but would treasure it as a milestone event in my life. I suspected that my emotions would be greatly impacted. All of my feelings and suspicions came true, and I am so much the better for having gone. At the celebration I was among many who embraced and kissed her cheeks. I am not certain that she recognized me, but as I looked into her eyes, I saw 'life" in a most grandiose fashion. She likewise gave to me her full attention, looking straight into my eyes('life to life'). This was just one of Mary's many birthdays, but I suspect none was as grand as this one. All of her days at this point totaled 36,500 compared to my 23,281 days; and all things being equal, some were obviously filled with adverse circumstances. Nevertheless, this Sunday evening was a very good day, and I was privileged to share this beautiful one with her. I shall treasure this her 36,500th day for the rest of my days. 06242013.
