Their silver eyes watch my disguise, and mourn for my mistake. If my heart is true, they say, why do I let hers break? I grimace at the bitter taste, but it is also sweet— her poor dissatisfaction lends wings to my retreat. O angels! Surely from your perch, you really ought to know, why I cannot run to her, and set her heart aglow. For though I love her more than words, than life, than liberty, remember well her nature, and then you, too, will see: I am a man, a mortal. I have my faults and fears.
