Sometime In the Past
there was a time in the distant past when love was sweet, a lover’s delight; there was a time when I sang my song and how you laughed like a child. was it because I, with my boyish grin, in those old, tattered pants and a stance so dream-like, sang out of tune? I used to wonder then but now I vaguely remember: you never really liked my singing, that was true, for I was not much of a singer then and even now. yet, did I not see a glitter in your eyes, a dance on those lips, a rhythm in your smile when I was through singing my love song? you were a child then, not really knowing how it felt to love and be loved for the world was so hard for you to understand. there's a space between us, you said, and love is just a crazy notion only for fools. you did not see how it hurt me to be left with my love hanging, dreams thoroughly shattered and hopes completely dashed to vanish into the wind. now in the haze of my memory, you, you somehow remain as if you have not truly gone away, but after the quiet of the evening dawn comes and with it reality. with a bittersweet sigh fit for the ages: if tomorrow finds me with a new love, I will have a ready smile, I’m sure, for I have learned my lesson well sometime in the past with you.
