What You Want
What you want is so much less Than what I would give you if I could, You and I are such pale candles, Our fevered fantasies of life Shine less brightly than an eclipsed moon That manages to remain visible at least Against the night’s pin pricked cloak. You and I, on our own, Are more like fireflies barely noticed In nighttime shadow of a looming elm, Our glow diminished by countless stars, Hallelujahs that conjoin with broader symphony Of God’s song. What you want could be so much more, Resting (Can you see it?) like a butterfly On a flower of God’s provision, Our slight wing movements catch the breeze So easily, because His burden is so light, Movement flowing from decision, Spreading Love like golden pollen To all of God’s creation, Fertilizing seeds that will keep earth blooming Long after human will fades, Our God shared dreams bear fruit. We kneel before the Creator And His Smile. And what I want is just to dream beside you Inhaling fragrance that just grows and grows, Let what you think of as your fragile blooming Forever more reveal the God sent rose I rest on.
