Where Leaves Fall
Where Leaves Fall Somewhere Near an eastern wall Where, after the wind The leaves will fall There is a door To another land But, lest you should enter Do you understand? You’ll imagine that the land is great Where you’ve been told that problems die And every pleasure lives But, you will learn it wryly hides its lie You’ll love it there At first, and for quite a while Your host will see to that You’ll be tended to with warm beguile You’ll be happy, or so you’ll think You’ll even feel admired But after a while, you must be warned You’ll slowly seem more tired Oh, you’ll remain there You can stay if you choose But you must realize there is one catch If you lay among the leaves, you’ll lose You’ll lose your family You’ll miss your friends You’ll wake up starving After the great feast ends Once realized, you’ll turn back And try to reach the exit door But, alas, the welcome’s trap Will toss you hapless, like wind - a leaf, on the floor You’ll peer through the gate from time to time You’ll be fooled to think it’s open You’ll see yourself among the leaves and think you’re through But find the mirror’s half broken Another pill, another puff Will make you think you’ll survive It’s not so bad, you’ll say to yourself As long as you stay alive The needles’ prick Will warm the coldest night The veins of leaves once green and wet Will shrivel in stupor’s fright Somewhere Closer to the egress portal Where, after the wind You realize the leaves are mortal There’s a reason the leaves fall there It’s an end place that leaves should dread The winds of life push and scatter The fallen leaves detached and dead Somewhere At eastern wall The winds of chance Left you where leaves will fall
