The Wild Ones
Loved is that dusty road and dell Dear to thee, that path and wold And clung to is that freedom swell Of open air, the way of old Drear is the roof above thy head Treasured is the natural sky How thee despised thine home and bed And thine heart longed for room to fly What art thee to choose the wild? When offered shelter, comfort, love? What art thee, not meek and mild, But fierce and sharp as the stars above Who am I to cage thee so, When I see thy true desire Is to run amongst the roe, And bed within the thorny briar? Who am I to take the beast, And bring it from the sky above Who am I, though I’ve never ceased, To give thee all my heart and love. When thou turns thine eyes to sea Or the heights of mountains reach When thou looks, please think of me Who gave you what I could not teach. So I will watch and wait for thee In hopes that thou art ever close by But if thou didst never see, Then how my broken heart will cry! Oh, for those who loved the free And for those who share my love The world will never weep for thee, But I will ever, for thee, my love I will wonder how long I must wait Before thy heart brings thee back to me But maybe ‘tis the design of fate If I wait forever for thee ©Copyright 2015.
