Wedding Bells
Wedding Bells By Kalyani Rajalingham My suitor’s lips spoke a thousand times, Of flowery praises and the honoured name of wife, Of lifelong joy and his tender love so true, As happy tidings chanted in the eyes of all, Families gathered to celebrate this bond by the holiest laws. In the midst of mirth and joy, My heart fought a hopeless battle, Foredoomed and forewarned to utter defeat, My lips froze with despair, my grief was selfish, For I wish not to lose my freedom, For a gift of eternal love. My suitor is a noble man of harmonious ways, But I leave him to accept this sorrow and grow, And like a blessing or a curse, I care not for his half-crazed love, And beset his life, false to hope. I have witnessed many a marriage go astray, To depths so dark, vanquished by the deepest sorrows, Smitten mute and blind by sympathetic aches and pains, No, We are dwelt by sight in worlds apart, I stand alone, well poised, to distil my life, With my hearty pride to foster my vision.
