My Little Girl
My Little Girl I did not have any morning sickness, I did not gain any weight. Did not have the dreaded back pains, was not given a due date. I did not have any labor pains, while everyone said to remain calm. I did not give birth to you, but sweetheart, I am your mom. I was not there for your first two years, but then your dad and I met. I fell in love with him and you, and have not fallen out of love yet. You provided a void in my life, and every time that you would smile. I would be reminded how God blessed me with a husband and a child. I have seen you grow up, and become a young lady now. I have been there for your happy times, I have seen you when you were down. I’ve taught you to respect yourself, and also to respect others. I’ve been their to give advice, sweetheart I am your mother. I’ve helped you with your home work, encouraged you to get A’s and B’s, I’ve taught you how to cook and clean, all the things that were taught to me. I’ve been there when you were sick, all feverish and frail, I’ve sat up most of the night and prayed that you would get well. I will be there taking pictures when you attend your senior prom. Of course I’ll be there, sweetheart I am your mom. When you graduate from high school, and the diploma is in your hands. Look closely, because I’ll be the one yelling the loudest in the stands. College after that, where you’ll remain for four years. I’ll be the one dropping you off and trying to hold back the tears. After college, start a career, and settle into your new life. Meet the man of your dreams, my little girl is now somebody’s wife. Then you’ll be a mom to one, or maybe even two. Then you’ll understand the unconditional love that I have for you. Sure, no morning sickness, I had no labor pains. No back pains and no weight gain. But, still my love is like no other. Because sweetheart, I am your mother. Your mother. This poem is dedicated to Alexis R. Scott. God made you, just for me.
