The First Showers
Monsoon rains Bring festivity, each year Yet I eagerly wait, to get wet In the first showers, each year. The peacock of my heart Dances round ‘n round, On the exhilarating tunes of ‘Megh Malhar’ Expressing its unbounded joy. The thick showers 'n scent of water From the dear dark clouds onto ‘n into it, make the earth reach its fulfilling climax making it feel shy like a coy maiden. It, in turn, hides its young body With the dark green scarf of grass ‘n shrubs And with its own intoxicating fragrance Indicates to all to have conceived. Even the hot westerly winds of May ‘n June Forget the dry, dour times they earlier faced And with childlike innocence, instantly they Transform into cool ‘n soothing easterlies. Becoming the front messenger of god clouds These easterlies bring the message, indicating that the king lover is back home After having traveled ‘n kissed the seven seas. Time for us to welcome the first showers Celebrating the season of fulfillment After a lengthy ‘n eager wait as does the lady earth Getting completely drenched ‘n feeling wet from inside. Date write: 8.7.2014 translated by myself from my Hindi poem 'sawan ki pehli fuhaar' 'Megh Malhar' is a Hindustani classical raga. The name derives from the Sanskrit word Megh, meaning cloud. Legends say that this raga has the power to bring out rains in the area where it is sung- def. from W'pedia.
