The Road of Twists and Turns
She pulled back the curtains and looked out again On the sun and the moon and the stars and the rain, On the Winter and Summer, the Autumn and Spring On chills and on sunshine, and whispers that sing, And her face carried hope, in its living etched lines With the reasons for living that life so defines, Yet her eyes held such reasons of deathless regret In her sunrises of hope and in every sunset. It seemed such a long while since they’d said goodbye When he’d marched down the road with the larks in the sky, He had held her and told her that they’d be back before long Then they’d marched down the road to the regiment’s song, And her heart remained light, at least just for a time As she adjusted her ways to life’s intricate rhyme, But as weeks turned to months, and as months turned to years Her eyes were mist clouded with tears and with cares. This morning she’d woke from a dream she’d long known Of how they’d be back together, no longer alone, As she drew back the curtains then lifted the net It had seemed like an age when the sun had last set, And yet it painted her face with her own hopes and dreams While it told her that nothing’s as bad as it seems, For down the road distant stretched his silhouette And she raced down to him until their shadows met…
