Endymion
Mythology Revealed: Endymion was a mortal man, perhaps a shepherd, who had a countenance of sheer beauty. He was fond of the mystic moon and her aura of light. This was a love affair between a mortal and a goddess. In turn, the moon goddess Selene fell in love with this mortal, and asked the all-father god Zeus to preserve his beauty. Endymion was put to an eternal sleep to preserve his beauty forever. Each night Selene would come to him to marvel and delight at the splendour of his beauty. The famous poet John Keats wrote: "A thing of beauty is a joy forever..." in his poem of the same name. To this day, the myth of Endymion lingers in the collective consciousness of humanity in various interpretations of many cultures beyond the shores of Greek mythology. ---------------------------------- Dear luna moon with your fine light, My pulse now swoons as my eyes sight Your lovely noon in mystic flight. Dark is the night when I retire With your fond sight that does inspire An inner flight that love conspires. A humble soul, this simple man, Endymion's whole, spellbound sure span In rapture's hold, in lovelorn trend. And in return, Selene cast light With sure concern to mark him right; Zeus did discern to bless this plight. A godly plan to grant wishing: A mortal man in sure love's fling; A sleeping grand as all time sings. So for all time, Endymion sleeps Bathed in light chimes with beauty deep; Selene's fond rhymes, blossoms now seep. Lovely love sleeps in brilliant light, Deeper than deep immortal sight; No need to weep for splendour's flight. Ancient myth glows in glimpses bold; The tale we know of choice that holds: Zeus set the show in wonder's fold. Oh mystic sleep, oh lovely light; Beauty so deep, loving so right; Fondness now peeps through starry night. Fond lovers greet each fateful eve, Eye to eye meet in timeless brief, Love's endless street beyond all grief. Start with mortal to greet love's light; Glimpse immortal Olympian sights; Love so vital as wonder bright. Dear maiden moon and man lover, In glorious swoon in makeover, At midnight noon, now forever. Oh luna rays that shine grand glow Upon our stay of mortal flow, Bless our fond play with lovely show. See warm moonbeams in crystal stay, Let light works stream with rainbow rays, To fit our dreams with grandeur's sway. Dark is the night when stars don't shine; Still moon delights both yours and mine, Luna insights hurl muse divine. Deep darkness falls upon this earth; We grope with gall since weary birth; Yet beauty stalls our deathless mirth! Leon Enriquez 16 Apr 2014 Singapore (Dedication: For Louise Holley, and Amy Green.)
