No More Oxygen
Soaked in your eyes on a blanket, the stars shine yellow Between the tree gap in the gale Where roots weave their slimy way in and out of life as if there was some harmony, some unforeseen purpose To the grinding repetition, drone of the day. We’re on a beach, as usual—the unusual escape, Where it’s easier to think about the waves Than being with you, so it’s easier just live. Water splashed up and a wave wrapped itself Around your body (I don’t blame him), Even though I’m jealous. It splashes in and out, under toe, Under stars and stares of the inquisitive And rushing liquid choking my veins, And glances choking my thoughts When there was no more oxygen, When the water was too much for me to breathe, When I had no oxygen, I breathed you in, And out again.
