Endangered Innocence
A night after work, David leaves walking, seeing no one outside, and hears no one talking. He heads up the street, and passes an old store, then moves on to the alley, just up a little more. After reaching the entrance, he sees a man there, and a woman laying before him with long red hair. The man turns around, dangling a knife, then David starts running, fearing for his life. While racing away, trembling in fear, he hears footsteps of the killer gaining in the rear. He has nowhere to run, no time to hide, groaning in exhaustion with pain in his side. While approaching from behind, the murderer yells, " You can't get away! I'll kill you as well! " The man yanks David by the back of the shirt, pushes him to a stumble, forcing him to the dirt. David looks up, begging for his life, eyeing a mad killer standing over him with a knife. " It's your time to die! " the savage yells, “ I’ve got to make sure that no one tells. “ " You can't run now! " the stranger adds with a moan, then kneels down slowly with an angry groan. David begins shivering as the knife touches his throat, in a daze staring the killer in a long black coat. He looks to his left, and sees a plank at his side, nearly three feet long and five inches wide. He grabs the wooden board as the killer snatches his shirt, easing it closer, grading the dirt. The man brushes the knife across David's face, threatening to kill him without leaving a trace. " Sweet dreams. " the killer whispers, with a short evil grin, pressing the blade on David’s throat again. David strikes him on the head with the dry piece of wood, splattering it to pieces, swinging hard as he could. The devastating blow forces the savage to the ground, puts his face to the pavement, laying still without a sound. David gets up, dropping a wood piece from his hand, staring the killer's body, in a motionless stand. He also sees blood coming from the man's throat, and stares the blade pierced through the collar of the man’s coat. David looks around, but there was no one in sight. For some mysterious reason, there’s no traffic out tonight. " Should I call the police? " he utters with a sigh. He thinks for a moment, then asks himself why. He wants to tell someone. But what will he say? Will they believe his innocence? Or will he be locked away? Copyright 2007 INSIGHTS by R. A. Jones
