Breaking Free
Heavy steel balls chained to both her legs. Dragging herself each day as though she has a wooden peg. A rain cloud over her head, she sees only black and white Belittled every day, she lost her strength to fight. Teardrops are stained on her puffy cheeks Life seems to have changed, everything is now bleak. Everywhere she goes, she drags along with her these steel balls Finding it hard to walk, she begins to crawl. Shattered, depressed, alone, uneasy and miserable Angry, afraid, broken, dreary and unstable Words that are written on each steel ball She’s giving up as life takes a toll. She drags herself, to the edge of a pier This storm, she feels, is never going to clear. Scared as hell and hesitating at first. She felt this was the only way to break her curse. With the steel balls chained to her feet She knew she will sink easily and accepted defeat. Tears streamed down as she looked up to say her final goodbye But as she was about to leap, something had caught her eye. She stood back, got her grip and stared to her side. And what she had seen was a blessing in disguise. An eight year old girl full of laughter and delight. Her soft blue eyes turned her world from dark to bright. She was so full of happiness as she played in the sand Running around carefree even though she struggled abit with just one hand. But that didn’t seem to get in her way of having so much fun Her laughter could be heard all the way to the sun. As she turned away from the pier, she started to run. She then realized that her life is not yet done. Each step she took, broke off the steel ball and chains The rain cloud disappeared and she felt free again. She felt the sun shine on her and a renewed strength And realized she’s the only one who can make her life content. She ran towards the girl breaking away all her despair. But when she got there, it seemed the girl had disappeared. She looked around in search of those beautiful blue eyes. But what she saw and found was a great surprise. The little girl was an angel who only she could see. This was God’s way of getting her to finally break free.
