Memorial Day
Memorial Day Nightmares haunt him in his sleep The faces of soldiers he couldn't keep His body drenched in sweat, yet shivering with chill As I lay beside him wishing peace within would hold him still He sees their shadows in memories throughout the day Yet he wakes and pushes on, willing it away The fireworks displayed on many holidays Remind him of sounds from those horrid days He defended our country, his actions are with honor Yet in his reflection he cannot see the valor in the mirror Scars from battle are visible on his skin But the scars run so much deeper within He walks with regret because he no longer serves and protects His body worn down, but he worries about the men that he feels he neglects A man of honor, a soldier, a vet Someone many easily forget Their sacrifices are more than most can imagine The simple idea many could not fathom So, today remember those who have fallen and do not forget To be thankful for the service of our Vets.
